Use a pencil to mark where the hinge should go on the post and then put the gate down.
How to make a sliding wood fence gate.
Saved by james hampton.
I decided to design my own.
Drill a pilot hole and drive an additional screw through the picket and into the crosspiece.
Repeat to attach the picket at the opposite end of the frame.
Prop up the gate and screw the hinges into the gate and attach the hinges to the post.
A diagonal cross brace was then added.
Once the fence is built there should of been enough time for the concrete to set.
I ve been meaning to rebuild one of my wooden fence gates that is over 12 years old.
Predrill where the screws will go.
Put the gate into place supporting it on the bottom with a 2x4 1 5 inch off ground.
That would hold the gate closed.
The existing gates were only a couple of years old and still worked fine you can see the making of them here but because of an uphill driveway they were aug 16 2013 introduction time to replace the double hinged driveway gates with a single sliding gate.
I have a family me.
See how i built a 12 foot wooden gate that won t sag.

Of you opt not to use concrete make sure you really compact the dirt around the posts well or the posts will work the hole and become loose.
Gate components apart from the gate i needed a track wheels guide rollers and some sort of latch the locking device on a door or window.
The gate was made by first creating an external frame of 2x4s that were screwed together with exterior screws installed through pre drilled and countersunk holes.
Using a drill driver drive 1 inch screws through the pilot holes and into the frame.
This will keep the gate square and prevent sagging.
The gate posts should have no problems supporting the weight of the gate now.
Diagonal cross braces like this should always angle downward to the lower hinge.
